Master A Latin Text, 10 Minutes At A Time
The last couยญple of years peoยญple have freยญquentยญly asked me how I learned to speak Latin and what they could do to improve their own Latin even if they had extremeยญly litยญtle free time. I believe everyยญone can teach themยญselves to speak Latin and read Latin fluยญentยญly. Itโs just a quesยญtion of motiยญvaยญtion, method and material.
There are many ways we can build our skill in a lanยญguage. Today I will treat one Iโve enjoyed a lot of sucยญcess with.
For more sugยญgesยญtions, read this artiยญcle about a method I adaptยญed from Erasmus.
First off, the key ingreยญdiยญent to gainยญing fluยญenยญcy in Latin is conยญsisยญtenยญcy and habit. Getยญting a good daiยญly readยญing (or lisยญtenยญing) habit is essenยญtial. Now, this is someยญtimes extremeยญly difยญfiยญcult with jobs, famยญiยญly life, hobยญbies and, well, life getยญting in the way. But there is hope: hereโs a quick-fix or, more accuยญrateยญly, a โslow-fixโ.
So today I thought Iโd present a techยญnique I use when I donโt have the time to read an hour a day.
This techยญnique is not only about readยญing but about realยญly masยญterยญing a piece of text and makยญing it your own. When Iโve done this, Iโve found I know the expresยญsions and strucยญtures almost off by heart. Then when speakยญing Latin, I have a ready source to draw from. Also, when readยญing a difยญferยญent text, itโs easยญiยญer to see simยญiยญlarยญiยญties and difยญferยญences in expresยญsions if you know a couยญple of texts realยญly well.
Lastยญly, being realยญly familยญiar with a numยญber of texts helps enorยญmousยญly with buildยญing conยญfiยญdence, which is an inteยญgral part of perยญseยญverยญing on the road to fluยญenยญcy. Letโs get into it.
I disยญcuss this techยญnique and more in this talk (in Latin) I gave in Floยญrence 2016 (Subยญtiยญtles in Latin are availยญable!):
Day 1: Materialโinteresting & level appropriate
First off, we need a text. An interยญestยญing text that we can also underยญstand, more or less. Pick one. It doesยญnโt have to be perยญfect. For some sugยญgesยญtions look through our growยญing selecยญtion of short recordยญings of Latin texts.
Pick a text and look through it withยญout readยญing it.
Just familยญiarยญize yourยญself with it.
Read a few words here and there. Itโs a first date, youโre just getยญting acquaintยญed. Put it down and let it rest until tomorrow.
A new day and a new step to take.
Pull out the old hourยญglass (or use a less fun timer). Set it to ten minยญutes. Start reading.
How much you read durยญing your 10 minยญutes is not imporยญtant, but to be able to perยญform the next steps, keep it to a few pages tops. Read at a pace at which you can underยญstand and visuยญalยญize the things you read. Note where you stopped.

Extra Credit: Visualizing
Visuยญalยญisยญing is a great way to see if you realยญly underยญstand a text. If you can picยญture it in you mind, you most likeยญly underยญstand it.
Furยญtherยญmore, it makes underยญstandยญing more lengthy senยญtences much easยญiยญer. For instance take a senยญtence like this from good olโ Caesar:
โPriยญma luce proยญducยญtis omnibus copiยญis dupliยญci acie instiยญtuยญta, auxยญiliยญis in mediยญam aciem coniecยญtis, quid hostes conยญsilii caperยญent expectabat.โ
Caeยญsar, de Belยญlo Gallico
When readยญing a senยญtence, try picยญturยญing each part before proยญceedยญing. For examยญple, after reading
โpriยญma luce proยญducยญtis omnibus copiยญis dupliยญci acie institutaโ
try to see a field with the sun just risยญing where the troops have been led out and placed into a douยญble batยญtle line. Then read on
โauxยญiliยญis in mediยญam aciem coniectisโ
and visuยญalยญize the auxยญilยญiary troops in the midยญdle. It doesยญnโt matยญter if you know what this actuยญalยญly looks like, just picยญture someยญthing plauยญsiยญble. Try to see the solยญdiers standยญing in these lines. Conยญtinยญue with:
โquid hostes conยญsilii caperยญent expectabatโ
Picยญture the genยญerยญal on his horse lookยญing around and waitยญing to see what the eneยญmy will do.
This may seem a very lengthy exerยญcise, but describยญing a picยญture requires, well, a thouยญsand words. In realยญiยญty, picยญturยญing someยญthing is a lot quicker.
Try it.
Picยญture an eleยญphant readยญing a book. Then write down that descripยญtion. Takes a while, right?

Now, many may say that they are not visuยญal, but I think most peoยญple are.
Think of any book youโve read and then seen a cinยญeยญmatยญic adapยญtaยญtion; maybe youโve gone โthatโs not what X is supยญposed to be like, look like etc.โ; the movieโs images conยญflict with your own visuยญal repยญreยญsenยญtaยญtion of the text.
Day 3: Re-read & Record & Read
On day three you set your timer and re-read the same text that you read on the preยญviยญous day. This will be a lot easยญiยญer, and probยญaยญbly quickยญer, than the first time.
Now comes the cruยญcial part. In the time you have left do this: Pull out your phone or any device with a microยญphone. Set it to record and start readยญing the pasยญsage that youโve by now read two times. Read slowยญly into the microphone.
When you record, it doesยญnโt have to be perยญfect, not even all that good, because between lisยญtenยญing to a less than perยญfect readยญing of a Latin text and not lisยญtenยญing at all, the choice is easy.
Record until your timer goes off. Save the file. Done for today.
The next day you conยญtinยญue readยญing. Then on the day after you record that text, and conยญtinยญue in the same fashion.
No Time To Record?
Someยญtimes thereโs just not enough time or strength to record it. It hapยญpens to all of us. Here you can find our Latin audio archive secยญtion; pick whatยญevยญer piques your interยญest and start from step 3.
You can find more audio and hours of video in Latin on our Patreยญon page. Become a Latiniยญtium supยญportยญer, and get access to tons of mateยญrยญiยญal, and new videos in Latin every week.
Day 4: From The Top
If you finยญished recordยญing the pasยญsage on the preยญviยญous day, start from step 1 and pick a new pasยญsage; othยญerยญwise, finยญish recordยญing the preยญviยญous one.
Listening
So, now we have some text recordยญed, what now?
Apart from the use we get from re-readยญing, we get a recordยญing to lisยญten to when we are going about our day.
Now we have to find time to lisยญten to it and this can be tricky but Iโll give you some examยญples of when Iโve lisยญtened to Latin:
- While brushยญing my teeth
- While havยญing breakยญfast (maybe less socialยญly acceptยญable if someยญone else is present, but heyโฆ)
- While comยญmutยญing to work
- While walkยญing
- At the gym
- While doing the dishes
- At the groยญcery store (this often leads to me walkยญing around forยญgetยญting what I was supยญposed to buy.)
These litยญtle bits of time amount to a lot of lisยญtenยญing if we do it everyยญday. For examยญple, I would estiยญmate I spend around 10 minยญutes standยญing in line durยญing a regยญuยญlar work day (cofยญfee shop, pubยญlic transยญport, groยญcery store).
Now, in a month that would make 10 ร 20 = 200 minยญutes = 3h 20min. Thatโs not bad.

Extra Credit: Go Fast
When weโve accuยญmuยญlatยญed some recordยญings and have lisยญtened to them a sevยญerยญal times, we will know the conยญtent pretยญty well. Now to go through it faster, if your device allows it; you can lisยญten to it at difยญferยญent speeds such as, 1.3X, 1.5X and even, for the brave ones, 2X the speed. Modยญern softยญware tend to keep the pitch more or less intact so that you donโt sound like a chipmunk.
Recap Of The The Steps:
- Day 1: Pick an interยญestยญing text that you can underยญstand. Familยญiarยญize yourยญself with it: Read a few words here and there.
- Day 2: Set a timer. Read.
- Day 3: Re-read the same passage(s). Record as much as you can in the remainยญing time.
- Day 4: Read a new pasยญsage or posยญsiยญbly finยญish recordยญing the preยญviยญous one.
- Repeat.
Give it a try. I always get a lot out of this method. Let me know how it goes. Start today by pickยญing a text.
